Life
Andrei Voznesensky was born May 12th, 1933 in Moscow, Russia. Voznesensky attended the Moscow Institute of Architecture in order to become an architect. All along, though, destiny had poetry in store for Voznesensky since, in 1957, a fire burned all of his senior-year work; leading him to make the decision to embark upon poetry instead.
Andrei Voznesensky wrote about this incident in his poem "Fire in the Architectural Institute".
"We were so tired that we were glad that final examinations had to be postponed. But for me it was more than a fire. I believe in symbols. I understood that architecture was burned out in me. I became a poet."
The poetry that Andrei wrote was very daring, and as a result he received repercussions from the government, especially from Nikita S. Khrushchev, the Soviet Union leader at the time. Though Voznesensky faced governmental opposition, his fans were loyal, supportive, and very enthusiastic. They gathered in the Luzhniki Stadium (pictured at top), which seated 14,000 people. Fans would swarm to meet him backstage after each show, proving the poet's unquestionable stardom.
On June 1st, 2010, Andrei Voznesensky passed away, leaving a legacy of courage, hope, and heroism.
